This month we were lucky enough to have had a chat with Perfumed Garden. They told us about their beginnings, the bands journey, and their new EP “Get me out”.
Let’s start with their individual beginnings:
Singer Max, the last one to join the band, started out with classical music through the influence of his mother, who is a classical musician. Because of a crush he had on a violinist he began playing the violin before starting to learn how to play the drums later on. At age 9 or 10 the guitar got interesting, and he stuck with this ever since, even now in the band he still plays it. At first, he started making music solely for himself but as he was asked if he’d like to join a band, even though he was hesitant, he said yes and realised how beautiful it can be to play with others. He’s been a part of Perfumed Garden for about a year now.
Brother’s Joe, the bassist, and Simon, lead guitarist, got a lot of musical influence from their grandparents, namely their grandfather who played a lot of music around the house and gave Simon a guitar at age 6, but in school he also started out with the violin while playing the guitar only for himself at first. After his A-Levels Simon lost sight of music and got into other hobbies until he joined Perfumed Garden in 2019 and rediscovered his passion for music. Jo was inspired to play bass by Kiss’ bassist Gene Simmons and due to his love for Falco’s music, but also a bit because his brother plays the guitar. He also played the piano at first and always wanted to know about the production side of things, something that is Simon’s job in the band, with his brother teaching him a thing or two they started out making dubstep beats and tracks at home for fun. Drummer Sammy has been playing in bands for what seems like forever and founded the band in 2017 under the name Barefoot, sadly he was not able to attend the interview, but his bandmates describe him as a genius musician who is also the drummer of the band “Butterbread.”
They are bound together by their upbringing in the countryside and their roots in classical music. With this in mind, it is no wonder that they have such chemistry on stage as well and the band has been flourishing ever since Max joined them in 2024. But let’s go back to the beginning:
The band started out as Barefoot in 2017 when drummer Sammy founded it with former singer Dani, over the years there have been changes to the line up the most profound ones being Joe and Simon joining, Dani’s departure, and Max joining the group a year ago as their new singer and rhythm guitarist. After Max and his former band parted ways, Sammy invited him to a jam session or rather band practice and he came prepared and highly motivated, more so than Simon who was the least enthusiastic about continuing but this soon changed after their current line-up was fixed. One month after this happened, they had their first gig with the band “Purple” at the legendary U4 club in Vienna, and from there on they couldn’t be stopped anymore; they played a concert at Replugged to a small group of people, due to several other cultural events happening, which still taught them a lot and was lots of fun anyways. After that gig they drove to Salzburg for what they call “band week”, a week of jamming, writing songs, and recording. This is where their new EP Get Me Out was born. There they lived their dream and had a wonderful time, bonded, and something beautiful was the process that got us the song Get Me Out: For them it was like magic because it got done on the first take and it was all jamming.
This is not their usual approach though as it is often Simon who comes around with finished ideas and they build on it, whoever brings the idea has the final say so there are so called Sammy-songs, Simon-songs, etc…
Get Me Out, their newly released EP, like already stated was born during their week in Salzburg where they went with almost zero expectations and came back with what is now a four song EP with a single of the same name. The themes of the songs all fit together; this, however, was not intentional but rather a product of coincidence. Every song tells a story about a relationship ending but in different ways. The song Get Me Out is not only special to them because of its origin story but also because for them it meant that they shouldn’t wait but get the EP out to the masses. Overall, it’s the song that means the most to them.
