Drunken Pumpkins – Punk²

In their new single “Punk²” Drunken Pumpkins are clearly referencing the lifestyle and morals associated with the punk subculture.

Music brings people together. As the austrian punk band states in the refrain: “We’re one big family, punkrock unity”

They also address freedom, which is one of the punk core-beliefs and morals. Another one of said core-beliefs is the frustration with social conventions and the way society functions in general, which is mentioned in the second verse: “Society not with me, telling me what I need to be, clearly our intention, break social conventions”

With raspy vocals, heavy instrumentals and overall the classic and raw punkrock sound Drunken Pumpkins bring across a quite uplifting message, as especially the end of the second verse shows. If you’re ever feeling down the community of the subculture got you. Punks stick together!

As  I analyzed the song a bit more I came to realize that it gets a lot more melodic and lightweight, and invites to sing along during the refrain. The lyrics managed to get stuck in my head and I find myself singing or humming the catchy refrain at the most random times.

Personally I love that we still have bands in the local scene that keep the subculture alive with political lyrics and elements that strongly remind of old-school punkrock.

If you’re one to enjoy some raw punk music, definitely make sure to give “Punk²” a listen!
